The Organized Move

The Organized Move

Every month hundreds of people move into new homes. This year several of my friends and clients have or will be moving.  Some are moving across town others across country and the questions have poured in.  Following are a few strategies that will help you get started on preparing for your move.

  • Create a moving countdown schedule to plan when  rooms/items need to be packed (home office, kitchen, closets)
  • Scan documents to decrease the amount of paperwork/files you transport
  • Shred documents no longer needed
  • Get supplies ( bubble wrap, boxes, labels, markers and packing peanuts)

Purge ( 80% of the stuff we keep we never use or reference it again)

  • Paperwork-financial documents and tax paperwork you no longer need
  • Books (Do you have the space for your current collection?)
  • Pots and Pans (When you entertain do you still cook or do you cater?)
  • Gifts and purchases that you never used

  • Expensive furniture and art work that you no longer like
  • Collectibles that you have outgrown
  • Items that are large and it would be expensive to move
  • New never opened or used items

  • Clothes you no longer wear ( suits)
  • Kids items that are gently used
  • Items that may be vintage
  • Duplicates ( measuring spoons, etc.)

  • Seasonal items ( Holiday decorations)
  • Seasonal clothes ( winter sweaters, hats and scarves)
  • Decorative pieces and artwork
  • Rooms that you don’t need (spare bedroom/bathroom)
