Are you ready to make this year the one where you finally declutter and organize your living space? Perhaps you’re feeling particularly ambitious and have set your sights on transforming your entire home, from the dusty attic to the cluttered basement. No matter which area of your home you’ve chosen to tackle, I’m here to provide you with the motivation and guidance you need to kickstart your organizing journey, ensuring you don’t become overwhelmed or let procrastination get the best of you.

To help you get started, I’d like to share the strategies I’ve successfully used with clients and in my own home. These tips have kept me focused, prevented overwhelm, and allowed me to complete organizing projects with a sense of accomplishment. Here are Janet’s steps to getting organized:

  1. Choose Your Starting Point: Begin by selecting a room or area in your home that you want to organize. It could be your bedroom, basement, or home office.
  2. Plan Your Organization: Consider how you want to organize the space. Determine if you need additional storage solutions or if existing storage and shelving can be utilized effectively.
  3. Start with a Manageable Project: Within the chosen area, identify a specific project that can be completed in a few hours. For example, you might tackle the closet, the filing cabinet, or a particular corner of the basement.
  4. Categorize Your Items: Sort the items in the selected area into similar categories. Group together clothes, paperwork, housewares, and so on.
  5. Create Five Categories: Organize each category further by separating items into five distinct piles, each with its purpose. Place these items in bags or boxes and label them accordingly: a. Items to remain in the space you are organizing. b. Items to store in other areas of your home. c. Items to donate. d. Items to discard as trash. e. Items to be shredded (for sensitive documents).
  6. Organize and Optimize: With items separated, it’s time to start organizing the space. The goal is to make everything easily accessible for you and your family, ensuring you can find what you need the first time you look.
  7. Use Smart Solutions: Implement space-saving hangers, label containers clearly, and add decorative touches with baskets to enhance the organized look.
  8. Maintain Regularly: After achieving your organized space, schedule regular maintenance sessions to keep things in order. Consistency is key to maintaining your newly organized home.

Finally, remember that organizing your home is a marathon, not a sprint. Take your time and move at your own pace. Resist the urge to become overwhelmed by the piles of clutter. Celebrate each completed task, and give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back for a job well done. By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to a more organized and clutter-free living space in the new year. Happy organizing!
