We’ve all been dealing with the life-changing effects of Covid19 for a while. But I think it’s safe to say we’re all ready to get on with our lives while also being realistic and responsible.
We can really go into summer with ease and comfort if we follow a few simple best practices.
Favoring small socially distanced gatherings over large crowds. Wearing masks, especially in public, indoor spaces. But what about our homes and personal spaces? What can we do to maximize our family’s health and safely?
It’s important to create simple and easy to follow daily habits. this is so much easier than to try to remember a ton of tiny details, that “ What am I forgetting?” takes up a lot of energy. Washing your hands, wiping down your phone and not touching your face should be as simple as other good hygiene like brushing your teeth. Personal cleanliness has very few down-sides. But what about your home cleaning routine? What habits can you build to keep your environment germ and virus free?
We spoke with Doug Ceol, the manager of Homeworks House Cleaning Service to get a better sense of how they focus their cleaning efforts with an eye to homeowner and staff safety. As a professional cleaning service, the Homeworks cleaning staff always wear PPE when cleaning. His request is that if possible customers not be home during the cleaning in the interest of social distancing. Doug routinely sends email reminders to customers on how to prepare their home for the arrival of the cleaning staff to facilitate a quick and painless turn-around time for a good thorough cleaning.
Doug also encourages the homeowner to ventilate their home prior to staff’s arrival if possible. Such a simple but very important thing to do. Ventilate your space daily! What we’ve learned about the Covid-19 virus is that it is an upper respiratory disease and that means what we’re breathing is very important so get some fresh air and light into your home and space. So when you wake up, make it the first thing you do; alarm goes off, you wake up, walk to the window, open the blinds and breath in some fresh air. (remember, you’re making it your new habit, so it’s now a part of your morning routine) This has the added benefit of being a delightful way to start your day with a moment to pause, be thankful and practice joyfulness.
We all know that disinfecting is important when cleaning but have you made a habit out if it? The Homeworks staff are trained to walk through a home, when they first arrive and spray a disinfect on all the touchpoints throughout the home. Think of all the places your hands regularly touch; door knobs, light switches, cabinet handles, counters, tables, desks, touch pads, remotes, banisters, handrails, etc. It’s important to do this with an EPA-Registered household disinfectant Homeworks recommends alcohol solutions with at least 70% alcohol. You can also use a solution of diluted bleach but remember, it can discolor and blemish fabrics and never, ever mix bleach with ammonia. This can create chlorine gas. Yikes !
For your laundry routine, remember to wash sheets and pillowcases weekly. Avoid shaking dirty laundry to keep from dispersing dust or virus through the air. Use the hot or warm setting on your washer and make this part of your weekly routine. We tend to forget that we spend 7 to 8 hours a night in our bedrooms or we should be spending that much time, sleep is so very important but we’ll save that for another post. By the way, if you haven’t Cleaned your mattress lately, it’s probably time. And try to get into the habit of doing that once or twice a year. If you need to, make an appointment with your calendar and add it to your spring or fall cleaning routine.
Your personal home cleaning habits and routine are more important now than ever in this new age of Covid-19. If you find it daunting to clean your home, hiring a professional cleaning service can help you get your home sanitized and back into good shape. Use it as an opportunity to learn house cleaning best practices. By setting up a regular schedule with a service it also becomes part of your regular routine, and yes, a habit. Easy peasy. This is a habit that will help keep your home, healthy, sanitized and clean in our new era.
