During my childhood, some of my most cherished memories were the intimate conversations I had with my father. The lessons he imparted upon me during those moments have truly become invaluable to my personal growth. Whether we were bonding on fishing trips or he was teaching me how to write checks from his old checkbook, my father’s unwavering belief in my potential for success always resonated deeply within me.
As I reflect on those cherished moments, I am reminded of the wisdom I’ve gained from the numerous guests I’ve had on my podcast over the years. This month, I decided to gather a collection of their most profound life lessons, all inspired by their own fathers. But before diving into their stories, I want to share a valuable life tip that I learned from my own dad.
Be fair. Be strong. Be in charge.

“You’re a Macy. Your word is good.”
“Your handshake is as good as your word.”
“You have to be able to look at yourself in the mirror every morning.” (Act accordingly.)
“Keep your nose to the grindstone, your ear to the ground, and your thumb half-way to your nose (which apparently means be open to things), and if you can do that (position), you can do anything…”

I would say one that taught me to always be a leader and tackle things head on was he always told me “never sit in the back of the classroom, always sit in the front of the class. Essentially take a “back seat” in life would never allow me to truly take a leadership role and have high impact results for myself or those around me.

My father lived to 91 years old and started his life in the working class of England. In the 1930’s, working class meant that the opportunity for his education would stop at 14 when he would go to work to support the family. By the vision and kindness of one of his teachers, his path was altered dramatically and he ended up becoming a doctor and moving to the United States. On his 80th birthday, he had one message to our family as he retold the above story in detail. Be kind.
