As you begin your countdown until the arrival of the Spring season is it time to get rid of the piles and clutter in your home and life? Following are things I do to tackle piles and clutter so I can continue to live an organized life.
Schedule enough time in the morning to make the bed and do dishes. Most days I wake up at 5am so that I have time to read, pray and listen to something inspirational before I get out of the bed. Once I do that I get up, get dressed, make my bed, eat, wash dishes ( no I don’t have a dishwasher) and head out the door. This ritual allows me to get the things I need to do so that when I return home, I return to a bedroom that is not disheveled and a kitchen that is organized.
When drawers, closets and counter tops become cluttered or stuffed I schedule time to purge. The key for me is that I already have existing people and places that I give items to. When I can no longer fit clothes I give them to a friend. For household items I always ask my friends first if they want them. If the response is no off they go to the neighborhood thrift store.
After returning from shopping I take all items out of the bag and put them away. No matter how tired I may feel everything is taken out of the bag when I return from a shopping trip. I place the items in the room they belong. Groceries go to the kitchen, toilet paper the bathroom and laundry detergent goes near my washer and dryer. When you don’t take them out the bag things get displaced. Once a client discovered a bag full of Spring dresses she brought her daughter the year before that she never figured out where they were until we found them in the original bag shoved in the corner of the closet during an organizing session. She could not believe the amount of money she wasted.
Junk mail and circulars get tossed immediately. Junk mail and store circulars that I don’t want are placed in the recycling bin to go out the door weekly. This helps me prevent piles from developing.
End my week with a clutter free space. That means clothes, shoes, jewelry and tote bags are put away that I am not going to use. This helps me keep my home organized and when I need to find something I don’t have to wonder where it is located because it is exactly where I keep it.
