With most of us spending more time at home and in the kitchen what a great way to kick off the Fall than with an organized kitchen.

I reached out to the kitchen organizing expert Bryan Dahn of the Fort Lauderdale Shelf-Genie and asked him to provide a few tips to help us get organized.

Janet:  What are some of the mistakes we make when it comes to storage in the kitchen?

Bryan, Shelf-Genie:  Not making zones.

Zones are areas of your kitchen you designate for specific tasks. Zones replace the old work triangle design principle where your refrigerator, stove and sink were placed closely together in a triangle configuration. This worked when kitchens were small and closed off, but now, our kitchens are larger and flow into other rooms.

Consider dividing your kitchen into five zones.  They are  prep, cooking, cleanup, food serving and food storage. Also keep all of the tools and supplies for that task in the same area where you’ll be using them. This allows for multiple cooks – one person can be in the prep zone while another is in then cooking zone and yet another in the food storage zone.

Zones also work in historic homes, vintage cottages and farmhouses. You don’t have to have a big space to organize your kitchen.

Janet: How can we maximize space in the kitchen?

Bryan, Shelf-Genie: Don’t be afraid to take everything out of your cabinets and rearrange. Next organize your stuff and actually use all of your space! That is right, use all the space because the bottom of the cabinet and the back of the pantry become that lost area never used.

Janet:  What are the trends in kitchen organization?

Bryan, Shelf-Genie: Clear containers that are uniform in size make it easy to monitor your food inventory whether you store items in a cabinet, on a shelf or in the pantry.
